Children Audio Books

Children audio books truly have to be one of the most wonderful inventions.  I am a huge fan of audio books and have purchased literally hundreds over the past dozen years.  My wife also loves them.  But what has been really great is how much our 14 year old daughter, Lindsey and 12 year old son, Connor love children audio books.  They’ve both been listening to children audio books since they were toddlers.  By now they each have a collection that would rival the public library!

Children audio books come in just about every genre you could imagine.  There are the classic tales such as Hansel and Gretel and Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. And of course, every book ever written by my childhood favorite, Dr. Seuss, is available as children audio books.  My daughter also loved the Dr. Seuss books, especially Cat in the Hat.  She could listen to the Cat in the Hat children audio books for hours and end if we allowed her.

When my kids were really young I was in still in the early stages of my career.  As a result I often had to bring my work home with me (much to my lovely wife’s dismay).  I would have papers and files to go through and reports to read up on.   I had recently discovered audio books myself and often listened to them while working out or driving, since I never had time for leisure reading. One day when I was looking to buy a new audio book, I noticed that there was also a huge selection of children audio books.   Had the bookstore I was at not been full of customers, I am quite sure I would have been jumping up and down like a kid!  I knew I had just discovered a gold mine when I found children audio books!

My wife was also thrilled.  Now I was able to spend time with my family after dinner in the evenings while still going over the endless piles of work I had to bring home.  Two nights a week was “story night” and we would let Lindsey and Connor take turns choosing from the selection of children audio books that we were rapidly accumulating.  At that time we were getting them as CDs (we just download most of them now) and after the perfect book was selected I would put it in the CD and let the reader do his or her magic.  I listened (with one ear) along with my family while poring over files at the same time.  My boss was happy, my wife was happy, and my kids would sit mesmerized as the talented narrator let the story unfold.  I have to say, as a busy parent, children audio books are a godsend!  It’s sort of like having a babysitter, storyteller and teacher all rolled into one.
If your family is like mine, your days are busy and hectic.  Purchasing children audio books is a great way to continually introduce new books to your kids.  I can’t recommend them enough!  They are entertaining, fun, and often very educational.  You can spend quality time with your family while you listen to a book together.  Your kids will love them and your spouse will be thrilled that she (or he) married such a brilliant person to come up with such a great idea!  Here are several children audio books I highly recommend:

• Brown Bear & Friends, by Bill Martin, Jr., and Eric Carle
• Green Eggs and Ham, by Dr. Seuss
• James and the Giant Peach, by Roald Dahl
• Dragon Rider, by Cornelia Funke
• The Invention of Hugo Cabret, by Brian Selznick
• The Frogs Wore Red Suspenders, by Jack Prelutsky
• Charlotte’s Web, by E.B. White
• Ramona’s World, by Beverly Clearly
• The Dangerous Book for Boys, by Conn Iggulden
• Indigo Dreams, by Lori Lite
