Harry Potter Audio Books

Being an avid listener of audio books, I was thrilled when the Harry Potter audio books came out.  And the best part, they are unabridged!!  I felt like a little kid at Christmas, grinning from ear to ear as if I’d just been handed the largest present under the tree when I bought the Harry Potter Audio Books! 

Jim Dale does a spectacular job reading the books.  His engaging voice kept me and my family completely mesmerized as we listened to the Harry Potter audio books during several long road trips this summer.  The series contains the full version of J.K. Rowlings phenomenal best-selling series centered on the fantastic escapades of the bespectacled adolescent wizard, Harry Potter, and his sidekicks Ron and Hermione.

 1. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

The first of the Harry Potter Audio Books, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, lays the foundation for the whole series.  You learn how Harry was orphaned at the tender age of one, when his parents were killed by his nemesis, the diabolic Lord Voldemort.  Lord Voldemort then tried to kill Harry with one of his death spells, but it backfired on him and left a lightening-shaped scar on Harry’s forehead.  Flash-forward 10 years:  Harry is living with his awful aunt and uncle.  He soon learns that he is a wizard and shortly thereafter is accepted into the Hogwart School of Wizardry and Witchcraft.  It is there he first meets Ron and Hermione.  Together they endeavor to keep the Sorcerer’s Stone from getting into the hands of the evil Lord Voldemort.  I knew when I first listened to this enchanting book that I had found a real gem.  I couldn’t wait to listen to the rest of the series! 

2.  Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

In the second of the Harry Potter Audio Books, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry is back at his dreadful aunt and uncle’s home. This book, like each in the series, is packed full of fun fantasy including flying cars, magic potions and hats, a petrified cat, giant spiders and a secret chamber complete with a monster.  It’s no wonder kids love Harry Potter!  My son, who has a vivid imagination, especially loved this book

3.  Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry is in his third year at the Hogwart school.  Sirius Black, a wizard who can transform himself into an animal, has escaped from the prison Azkaban bent on revenge.  In this third book of the Harry Potter Audio Books, Harry engages in time travel and must ward off vicious trees.    

4.  Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is number four (and one of my favorites with its particularly intriguing twists and turns) in the Harry Potter Audio Books series.  Now in year four at Hogwart, Harry participates in a competition for wizards, Lord Voldemort schemes to regain his power, and, much to my sad surprise, one of his friends dies (I won’t say who, so as not to spoil it for you!).  This book especially kept me on the edge of my seat, so to speak!  My daughter and wife both cried when Harry’s friend died, but they still loved the book overall.

5.   Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

In the fifth book of the Harry Potter Audio Books, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry must use further magical powers to fight off evil creatures such as Dementors and Death Eaters. Voldemort also returns and, in order to protect Harry and others from his evil intentions, a secret group called the Order of the Phoenix is re-instated.  Harry also learns that he has a special type of connection with Voldemort. 

6.   Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

I especially loved Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the second to last of the Harry Potter Audio Books.  It is delightfully complex as it chronicles Harry’s sixth year at Hogwart, with him now in mid-adolescence.  Voldemort has regained his power, and much of his mysterious past is revealed.  Harry learns various potions and spells from a former text of the Half-Blood Prince.  He also falls in love (much to my 14 year old daughter’s delight!) with his friend’s sister.  At the close of this sixth book of the Harry Potter Audio Books Harry determines to kill Voldemort, and his close friends are determined to join him.  Henry’s new romance brought back very fond memories of my first “love” when I was a teen!

7.  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

The last of the Harry Potter Audio Books is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.  I don’t know about you, but for me it is always bittersweet to come to the last book of an incredible series.  But in spite of that, I enjoyed this one every bit as much as all the other Harry Potter Audio Books.  In the Deathly Hallows, Harry and his two best friends, Hermione and Ron, take leave of their schooling in pursuit of destroying Voldemort.  A gut wrenching battle takes place in which many key players are killed.  It is the classic battle of good versus evil, both highly entertaining as well as thought provoking. 

If you are a Harry Potter fan (and who isn’t?!) then the Harry Potter Audio Books are definitely worth buying.  Not only is this series entertaining for the whole family, it also led to some excellent discussions with my children about good versus evil, and the power of friendship.   I highly recommend this series.  The recording is top notch and well worth every penny!
